1 Day 45km - Shuttle & Ride Or Boat & Bike

The 45km Lake Dunstan Trail leads you through the unique and fascinating landscapes of Central Otago, while following Lake Dunstan, the Kawarau River and the mighty Clutha River which links the townships of Clyde and Cromwell.

Your adventure starts at the Kiwi Journeys Cromwell depot at 8.30am for a briefing and bike fitting prior to taking the 9.15am shuttle to Clyde.  Upon arrival, you can enjoy a coffee at one of the many café/restaurants in the Clyde Heritage Precinct prior to starting your adventure.

You have 2 ride options:
  • Take the shuttle to Clyde (9.15am) and ride back to the base in Cromwell.
  • Leave from the Cromwell depot and ride to Clyde for an afternoon pick-up (4:00pm)

You can ride both ways but the team recommend option 1 as you are cycling on the inside of the trail (safer side) and you can cycle to Carrick Winery just in time to enjoy lunch and a glass of wine around 1.00pm, making it the best option!

Ride Itinerary:
  • Clyde Heritage Precinct to Dunstan Arms Rowing Club 3.5km (grade 1).  From Clyde you head over the Clyde Bridge to meet the trail heading towards the Clyde Dam (New Zealand’s third largest hydro-dam) and Dunstan Arms Rowing Club.
  • Dunstan Arms Rowing Club to Halfway Hut 10.7km (grade 2-3) - There are plenty of picnic spots to stop and enjoy the lakeside on this section.
  • Halfway Hut to Cairnmuir Gully 8.4km (grade 2-3) -  This section features narrow sections and more gradient.  It also includes the highest point of the trail with magnificent views and The Hugo Suspension Bridge.  'Coffee Afloat' awaits to stop for snacks.
  • Cairnmuir Gully to Bannockburn Inlet 11.3km (grade 2-3) - This section includes the first of the bluff bridges. You will cycle at the base of the stonework faces of the Cairnmuir slide, a unique feature high on the slopes above the lake.
  • Continuing towards Cornish Point and cycling though vineyards and olive groves, you reach Carrick Winery & Restaurant. Stop for a glass of wine and lunch.
  • Bannockburn Inlet – Cromwell Heritage Precinct 7km (grade 2) -  Follow the trail cycling under the Bannockburn bridge following Lake Dunstan to Cromwell Heritage Precinct.  Then cycle back tothe Cromwell office (2.5kms) to return your bikes by 5.00pm.
