Central Stories Museum
Alexandra
Visit the Central Stories Museum on Wednesday at 11.00am to see three of the most critically threatened lizards in New Zealand hunting for insects at feeding time.
Centrally located at 21 Centennial Avenue in Alexandra, Central Stories is the main public art gallery & museum for the Central Otago region.
The museum features displays of Central Otago's gold mining geological, agricultural and social history. The displays also includes the story of the arrival of Chinese migrants, the first wine producers and the development of local industries.
The museum is also home to a live display of the Otago Skink (Oligosoma otagense) an endangered lizard species. With only approximately 2000 left in the wild, you will need to look under the overhanging rocks in its enclosure to see this secretive animal.
