Skippers Canyon
Queenstown
Skippers Canyon is a historic and scenic gorge, some 22 kilometres in length, that is located 25 kilometres north of Queenstown. Today, it can be accessed from Queenstown via the same road that leads to Coronet Peak skifield.
Once a busy goldmining area, Skippers Canyon houses the Shotover River, one of New Zealand's richest gold bearing rivers which was named by William Gilbert Rees.
Access to Skippers Canyon is by the narrow, steep and winding 13 km Skippers Road, that only experienced drivers should attempt to drive.
How To Get There
From Queenstown, head along Gorge Road towards Arthur’s Point and take the turn-off to Coronet Peak ski field. Off that road, turn left onto the unsealed road signposted to Skippers. From Skippers Saddle, continue on the winding 13km Gorge Road to Skippers Bridge and Mount Aurum Recreation Reserve. The drive takes between 1.5 and 2 hours.
