An Alexandra landmark, Shaky Bridge is a relic from the goldmining era. The iconic suspension bridge played an important role for wagons and horses crossing the river during the gold rush days.
Before it was constructed, the only way to cross the Manuherikia River was by punt, which could be fraught with risk when the river was high.
Opened in 1879, Shaky Bridge cost $1,949 to build but was was later sold for just $2 to two settlers living across the river. After a period of neglect a special committee organised the repair and re-opened the narrowed bridge to cater for foot traffic only. Today, during the warmer months, you'll find families enjoying a swim in the pretty river. A nearby cafe is an opportunity for refreshments with indoor and outdoor seating
Close to the bridge, is a short and steep trail that leads to the large and much photographed landmark clock that looks down over the town.
