Conceived 50 years ago, the National Toy and Transport Museum has developed from one man’s dream into a major Wanaka attraction.
Over 50 years ago, a professional car and truck wrecker named Gerald Rhodes decided to create a museum to showcase iconic and nostalgic vehicles and toys. Thanks to his profession, he had access to classic automobiles, and his collection began.
Among the beautiful, restored vehicles are cars, motorbikes, fire engines, steam operated vehicles and more. The museum also displays toys and includes over 500 Barbie dolls, produced over decades and with a variety of accessories and clothing.
The museum now holds over 50,000 items, and the collection is always growing. Visitors come back again and again to see what new additions have been made to the museum.
The museum is also home to a large outdoor space with a playground and pedal toys for children to enjoy. There are picnic tables and guests are encouraged to enjoy lunch on the grounds.
