Kinloch Wilderness Retreat
Backpackers
Lodges
We bought Kinloch back in 2000, rescuing this special place from demolition after it was so lovingly built back in 1868. During this time we have thoughtfully renovated everything, and are working towards self sufficiency with many solar panels, EVs, electrifying instead of having gas brought up, growing our own food and more. We offer low-carbon activities for guests such as kayak trips, yoga classes, e-bike hire and fishing rod hire, and take our guardianship of the land seriously.
The site can sleep 57 people across a wide variety of 22 rooms, from shared dorms to family rooms, double rooms and our EcoScapes. There's something for everyone. Our restaurant focuses on crafting nourishing meals from local and organic ingredients served alongside boutique and award-winning drinks from the area. Nearby are over 20 different walks/hikes and many local tour operators keen to show you their special part of the head of the lake.
In addition to the benefits of being in the bush, which does wonders for the soul, Lake Whakatipu provides a refreshing dip, and our newest offering, the wai area, has an infra-red sauna and large spa pool for wellness recovery. Just 1hr from Queenstown, but a million miles away! You don't have to stay with us to enjoy the restaurant, wai area or our activities.
