Mount Iron Walk, Wanaka

Family Fun Inspiration

A climb up one of the best short walks in Wanaka

If you’re visiting Wanaka from Queenstown for a day trip, or staying in Wanaka, a great short walk close to the town centre to tackle is the Mount Iron Walk.

To find the walk, head along State Highway 84 and turn off into the small car park on the left.  If you’ve gone past Puzzling World, you’ve gone too far.

From the car park, take the left fork of the track which climbs scrubland on the western side of Mount.  It’s a favourite ‘fitness spot’ with locals so you’re more than likely to see a few joggers on the way up.  At the summit, along with the views there are a few information panels about the area.

Mount Iron itself is a glacier carved, rocky knoll that climbs approximately 250 metres above the surrounding countryside.  At the summit, you get 360-degree views of Lake Wanaka, The Pisa range, the Upper Clutha Basin and the Southern Alps.

Leaving the summit, the track descending on the eastern side will take you back to the car park.

Need to know:

  • 4.5 kilometres loop walk.
  • 90 minutes to complete.
